This statue simply explains the core occupation of the first settlers in Lagos which was fishing. This then introduced the use of canoes to represent each local government within Lagos state.
The community statue is made up of 57 canoes depicting the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Community Development Areas with their maps carefully designed on each canoe.
The statue goes further to explain the beauty of Lagos and its level of accommodation of people from different works of life and social background, hence the intentional cluster arrangement of the canoes.
The upright positioning of the canoes was inspired by the sky line of Lagos being a city. It also acts as an archival material documenting the map of Lagos.
The artist brought this to life to showcase the beauty of Lagos state with roots embedded in the rivers that the boats sail on.
This installation or art work is simply an excellent display of the unity and the community in Lagos, depicting it as a shelter that helps people to live, grow and survive.
