Tour Africa: Can you tell us about your background and your connection to Amuwo Odofin?
Chief Ogunbayo: My name is Gbenga Ogunbayo. I’m a trained quantity surveyor and currently the CEO of AG Balorey Nigeria Limited. Although I’m originally from Ogun State, I was born and raised in Lagos, where I have lived for 56 years. My company and business operations are based in Lagos, and my contributions to Amuwo Odofin earned me this recognition.

Tour Africa: What does receiving this chieftaincy title mean to you personally and for your family?
Chief Ogunbayo: This is not the first time I’ve been honored for my dedication to the environment and the wellbeing of people, i have received a similar hononr in the past, in Oregun. This new title signifies the fulfillment I feel from positively impacting my community.

Chief Ogunbayo: The role of Otun Maiyegun is primarily about collaborating with other chiefs to uplift Amuwo Odofin and promote it on local and international levels, including among people in the diaspora.

Chief Ogunbayo: It’s my dedication to service. My service to Magodo, where I live, to Oregun, where my office is, and now, Amuwo Odofin; I consistently contribute to uplifting these communities.

Chief Ogunbayo: It aligns perfectly because i’m passionate about giving back, whether through financial assistance or moral support, and this title reinforces my commitment to service and community development.

Tour Africa: How do you plan to uphold and promote the culture and traditions of Amuwo Odofin?
Chief Ogunbayo: I stay informed about activities in Amuwo Odofin, and lend my expertise whenever needed. Tour Africa: What role do you think chieftaincy titles play in preserving Nigerian culture today?
Chief Ogunbayo: Chieftaincy titles were deeply connected to daily societal activities during our forefathers’ time. However, at some point, there was a disconnect. Fortunately, people are now gradually returning to their cultural roots. For example, events like Ojude Oba in Ijebu Ode and cultural celebrations in Amuwo Odofin clearly demonstrate the importance of tradition. Moreover, these titles foster giving back, encourage socializing, and help preserve our heritage.
Tour Africa: How do you intend to involve the youth in maintaining cultural heritage?
Chief Ogunbayo: Youth engagement is essential. For instance, in the past, many believed cultural activities weren’t aligned with modern beliefs. However, now there’s a growing realization that promoting community traditions is vital. Therefore, by actively encouraging participation and clearly highlighting the benefits, we can help the youth appreciate and sustain our customs.

Contributions to the Community
Tour Africa: What specific contributions have you made to the development of Amuwo Odofin?
Chief Ogunbayo: This is a new title; however, i have always contributed to community progress and will, without a doubt, continue to do so.
Tour Africa: Do you have any upcoming projects or initiatives for the community?
Chief Ogunbayo: The chiefs and I are working together to plan initiatives that will benefit the community. Furthermore, by the end of the year, we’ll host an event to serve the people. Additionally, we’ll invite Tour Africa to cover it.
Tour Africa: How will you use your position to address pressing issues in the area?
Chief Ogunbayo: I’ll diligently apply my skills and expertise to not only identify but also effectively implement solutions that directly address community needs.

Tour Africa: What challenges do you foresee in your role as a chief, and how do you plan to overcome them?
Chief Ogunbayo: Life itself is full of challenges; however, the key is to manage them effectively. Admittedly, I know this role will take time and effort. Nevertheless, I’m fully prepared for the responsibility.
Tour Africa: How do you intend to balance traditional responsibilities with your personal or professional life?
Chief Ogunbayo: It’s about balance. Similarly, like a marriage, you must allocate time to each aspect of your life. Therefore, i intend to balance my professional, personal, and cultural responsibilities effectively.

Tour Africa: In your opinion, how can traditional leadership and modern governance work together to improve communities?
Chief Ogunbayo: Traditional leadership can bridge the gap between government and the community. Consequently, we aim to create inclusive programs where everyone works together. Ultimately, our aim is to achieve common objectives that directly benefit Amuwo Odofin.
Tour Africa: What advice would you give to younger generations aspiring to serve their communities?
Chief Ogunbayo: Elders used to involve their children in community service, not just as observers but to learn and improve on these practices for the future. Therefore, i advise the younger generation to embrace this approach.
Tour Africa: What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a chief in Amuwo Odofin?
Chief Ogunbayo: My background and experience in the constituency drives me to focus on infrastructure development. However, we’ll collaborate with the government to implement programs tailored to Amuwo Odofin rather than relying entirely on external initiatives.
